On Thanksgiving morning don't forget to burn some calories, catch up with the neighbors, help the community and go home with a sharp looking t-shirt (and maybe more). That's right … please come to the Dick Meighan Memorial 5k Run. Once again, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the Upper Saddle River Rec Commission promises another stellar event. We expect the usual highly-competitive individual and family competitions, plus we'll be providing top-notch awards, a complimentary t-shirt, and a super spread of post-race refreshments. 2012 Photos by Studio Eleven. To support and reward the participation of young people, age divisions are: 10-and-under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-24, 25-29. In 2007 we added a new catagory, The Baby Buggy Brigade, to add a new element of fun to the annual race. The LOU LUPINACCI AWARD, initiated in 2011, in memory of Upper Saddle Resident and Friend Lou Lupinacci, will be awarded to the youngest girl and the youngest boy to run or walk across the finish line with no assistance. The award is sponsored by the Bauer/Guild/ Mazzutto Family. The run was inaugurated after the September 11, 1999 death of Upper Saddle River resident Dick Meighan. Dick was a long time resident and active participant in community life. He was a coach to hundreds in a variety of sports which spanned the ages and interests of his four children. He is sorely missed, but memories of his devotion to family and community spirit live on in the race. Proceeds from the event continue to benefit the local community, including D.A.R.E., the SRV Rescue Squad, Ambulance Corps and Fire Department, USR Education Foundation, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, USR Youth Triathlon, Shelter Our Sisters, Oasis, Children's Therapy Center, The Rose Foundation of Haiti, and the "Extra Mile" Scholarship Fund. Total donations exceed $200,000. The race has also provided much Thanksgiving Day joy to thousands of runners and their families. It's a fitting tribute to Dick's memory, and the Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission is extremely grateful to all who support the event.
